Life without Alcohol – My Journey from the Beginning

A No Holds Barred breakdown of my life and how I am trying to remove my demons to lead a sober life

Alcohol ..Good or Bad Thing !!!

Been a while since I posted it’s been a busy time at home and work, finally called it a day on the railway and took early retirement so the last 8 weeks since my last shift have been pretty busy actually doing everything I have or never seem to have time to do. My last few days at work were strange for me knowing after 41 years I was finally putting me and my health and family first, my last ever announcement was recorded and was posted on the work inhouse webpages but also by our video tech man on his personal Twitter account, this was picked up by the BBC business pages who wanted a conversation with regards to work / life balance and early retirement, here’s the link to the article

My Last Announcement after 16 years on the railway

The twitter link I have kept with my last announcement is above, anyway got loads done at home garden more or less sorted, garage doors painted and finally cleaned out so I can do my own thing with it at last, amazing how much crap my wife has collected over the years and yes Im still not drinking 329 days as I type this and still not missing alcohol but had a massive wake up and feel how lucky I am in the past few weeks.

One of our friends who has always been a drinker and was in the pub more or less every day was took seriously ill on holiday and ended up in intensive care and at deaths door, we had been out with them a few days before they went away and although he had health issues anyway not booze related there was no signs of anything wrong or so we thought but away they went and we arranged to meet up after they come back from holiday a few weeks later. Well I received a phone call saying things were not good and it was touch and go after collapsing on holiday our friend was rushed to hospital, life had caught up with him but stopping drinking was the only way to stay alive basically.

After about 6 weeks he is finally back home we visited the hospital to see him recently and I was prepared for a shock but when I saw him it was a bigger shock than I was prepared for, a shadow of the man we had been out with a few weeks before, it gave me thinking time as to how that could have been me or worse if I had not taken any notice of the doctors nearly a year ago, so for me and my friend ALCOHOL is a bad thing that caught up with both of us but a good thing for raising the health issues for us to deal with and go sobriety forever.

I have my adventure to Iceland (not the shop) coming up next week and I have also booked a few days in Krakow for March next year, another on my bucket list to do Auschwitz, so my next post will probably be about my Iceland trip and hopefully the Northern Lights.
